Learn the ancient weaving technique of twining and use up all those bits and pieces youve been saving. Using paper core, seagrass, wire, wool, fabric and beads, you can create a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Size of the finished project: One 6" - 8" gourd with several rows of twining and a woven rim.

The Instructor will provide the following:
All materials supplied, including cut, cleaned, drilled and sealed gourd and all materials, as well as a tutorial. Wire snips and awls will be available to share if needed.

Students should bring:
Scissors, tape measure, bucket for water, awl if they have one, wire snips if they have one.

Students will learn how to make a First Nations Influenced project.

The Instructor will provide the following:
Cut and cleaned 8"-12" gourd bowl, acrylic stain, paper towels, acrylic paint, tape, transfer paper, pencils, beads, thread, needles.

Brushes (No. 1 or 2 liner), sponge brush (for staining).

Students will learn to construct a humourous male face caricature on a gourd. The face will be sculpted using Apoxie Sculpt air dry clay. The basics of facial expression and proportion will be covered but students are encouraged to create their own individual character. If time permits, the completed caricature faces will be painted.

The Instructor will provide the following:
Apoxie Sculpt air dry clay, some sculpting tools, paint, gourd, embellishments.

Students should bring:
1 paint brush suitable for painting small detail, 1 flat or round brush appox. 1/8" suitable for larger areas, any favourite sculpting tools they may already own.

Students will learn how to make their choice of a Gourd Hand Drum or Gourd Frame Drum with beater. After cleaning & finishing the drum shell, you will attach a goat skin head using traditional roping methods. Drums will be fully tunable & beaters will be assembled for frame drums.

The Instructor will provide the following:
Cut gourd, cleaning tools, sanding paper, goat skin, drum rope, metal rings, materials to assemble beater.

Students should bring:
Cleaning tools, light gloves, dust mask, apron.

Students will learn the Art of turning hard shelled gourds into attractive and useful birdhouses. To do this, students will learn how to prepare the gourd, to choose the correct paint and paint types, techniques in applying paint, and how to varnish finish coats.

Gourds, paints, varnish, paint brushes, gourd cleaning tools, sand paper, tutorial.

The basics of layout, colour theory, blending, and shading with coloured pencils.

The Instructor will provide the following:
Cleaned, outlined, and painted gourd (5" - 6" cannonball gourd); as well as a tutorial.

Pencil crayons (24-60 pencils), an eraser, a good hand sharpener.

Waste not, want not! Mary will guide you through the process of using "gourd guts" to make paper. Time permitting, you'll then bind your gourd paper booklet to take home.

The Instructor will provide the following:
Handout instructions, gourd 'guts', tubs, blender, towels, irons, a variety of moulds and deckles, linen thread, darning needles.

Students should bring:
Mask, apron, old towels, feathery gourd guts (if you have some).

Create a lifelike pony portrait with your variable temperature wood burning machine. Shading and highlighting techniques will be featured and a ball tip or spoon shader is essential for this class. Pattern transferring techniques and gourd preparation and finishing will also be discussed. Note: The pattern we will be using is from an original pen and ink drawing by Claudia Nice.

The Instructor will provide the following:
1 cleaned gourd, transfer paper, pattern, sandpaper.

Students should bring:
Pencil, red pen or stylus for transferring pattern lines, white eraser, variable temperature wood burner (eg. Razertip) *, ball-tip burning pen (1.5 mm and .08 mm), skew or knife tip burning pen.

*Note: If you do not have the necessary wood burning equipment, or are contemplating purchasing a wood burner, please contact the instructor before doing so.
